My final assignment for Perspectives this year is a Piano composition. I have incorporated a number of ideas and elements to try and make this piece sound unique. Straight off the bad you'll notice that the entire piece is atonal. I did this for two reason:
1) I haven't written an atonal piece before so I wanted to try something different
2) It allowed me to use some effects on the recording to enhance the crazy or scary theme. A normal piece with harmony may distract the user from the point of the piece
Throughout the piece I have utilized many of the structures used in composition. I feel the most common is the use of tangential form. I have also used co-extreme, inclusive and co-extensive.
In the piece I have used the piano's foot pedal quite deliberately to create sound at the beginning of the piece. I have also used the pedal throughout the piece to carry the ambience and vast amounts of reverb.
I have used a Pitch Correction plugin called Autotune on two channels of the recording. These are set to correct the notes to either a major or minor scale. This results in notes bending; a sound that is obviously impossible to re-create on a standard piano.
The piece was recorded using three microphones. Two were positioned as spaced pairs in A-B configuration. The third microphone was a room microphone and recorded the room ambience.
I hope you enjoy my piece.
